What Is De Colores?
De Colores was brought to the Americas in the 16th century from Spain, though its exact origins are unknown. Since then, it has been sung throughout the Spanish-speaking world as a powerful symbol of Latino/Hispanic culture, vibrancy, color, and diversity.
Its message emphasizes hope, nature, community, and unconditional love. For centuries, De Colores has brought people together to celebrate Latino heritage, unity, and cultural pride.
It is also a beloved children’s folk song taught across schools in the hemisphere, helping younger generations connect with their cultural roots and embrace the beauty of life’s diversity.
Latinos Are De Colores
Latinos in the U.S. were officially recognized as a distinct demographic in the 1980 census. Today, Latinos are still shaping a shared identity.
We are a mixed-heritage people—Indigenous, African, Spanish, European, and more—connected to 26 Spanish-speaking countries.
Latinos are also the youngest major population group in the U.S., with 25% under 18, signaling growing influence and cultural impact.
This diversity raises a powerful question:
How do we unify so much diversity into pride, identity, and collective power?
